Cover: Morphological roadmap of the building plan of the heart. The embryonic circulation starts with the formation of the linear heart tube that can be considered as a modified vessel enfolded by a muscle mantle of primary myocardium (purple). Blood is pushed ahead by waves of contraction running along the heart tube from the venous to the arterial pole. Subsequently, atrial (blue) and ventricular (red) chambers are formed locally but remain flanked by primary myocardium (purple) that functions as sphincters until valves have developed. Within the domain of primary myocardium, the conduction system will develop. See Moorman, Antoon F. M., and Vincent M. Christoffels. Physiol Rev 83: 1223-1267, 2003.
